SAN JUAN, PR AND WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 22, 2025 – MZLS, a Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.-based law firm, announced today the formalization of its leadership structure as part of a strategic reorganization to support continued growth and strengthen its role in public legal discourse.
As part of this realignment, the Hon. Edgardo Rivera García — retired Justice of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court and current Special Counsel at the firm — has been appointed as the official spokesperson for MZLS. His designation represents an unprecedented milestone in Puerto Rico’s legal sector, bringing to the public sphere one of the most respected judicial voices of the past two decades. This move reflects MZLS’s commitment to engaging more actively in legal and regulatory discussions that affect Puerto Rico’s business climate and the development of its legal system.
The firm anticipates increased participation in professional associations, public forums, and specialized media outlets following this appointment.
While Attorney Anthony O. Maceira Zayas will remain as Managing Partner, he will focus primarily on expanding the firm's presence in Washington, D.C.—including advising and representing clients before federal agencies, strengthening government relations, and supporting regulatory compliance efforts. Over the past two years, the firm has doubled its legal team, and since opening its D.C. office less than a year ago, it has successfully incorporated best practices from the national legal landscape that are not typically implemented in Puerto Rico. This comparative perspective has driven internal innovation and enhanced the quality of services provided to clients.
The restructuring also formalizes the roles of several key attorneys within the firm. Justice Rivera García’s appointment as spokesperson builds on his distinguished career and unique perspective in guiding MZLS’s public commentary and legal positioning. Attorney Mabel Sotomayor Hernández, who joined the firm in May 2025 as a non-equity partner, will now lead the Public Law practice, bringing significant government experience to the role.
